In 2019, after an uprising in the USA sparked a global nuclear war, humanity was nearly wiped out by a disaster known as "The Maelström." Fifty years later, the World Health Organization (WHO) has gradually taken control of world governments, reshaping society to prioritize human well-being. People are treated as public resources, with advanced medicine, nanomachines, and augmented reality ensuring their health and happiness. Miach Mihie, a high school student stifled by Japan’s overly kind society, rejects what she sees as a dehumanizing system. Before her mandatory health-monitoring implant, WatchMe, activates on her 18th birthday, she plans to die with her friends Tuan Kirie and Cian Reikadou. But Cian, disagreeing with Miach’s choice, betrays them, leaving Tuan as the sole survivor while Miach is declared dead. Thirteen years later, Tuan works as a high-ranking inspector for Helix, a WHO-linked group overseeing military conflicts. After her involvement in drug smuggling during the Niger warzone operations is uncovered by senior inspector Oscar Stauffenberg, she is sent back to Japan-the country she once fled. On her first day back, thousands of people suddenly kill themselves. Now, Tuan must investigate this mass suicide event and uncover the terrorist group responsible.
