The Rose of Versailles
In an effort to forge an alliance between their nations, the Empress of Austria arranges for her daughter, the charming but spoiled Marie Antoinette, to marry France's crown prince, Louis XVI. When Antoinette arrives at Versailles, she encounters Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, the seemingly gallant young Captain of the Royal Guards-only to discover, to her shock, that Oscar is actually a woman. Born into a noble family with no male heir, Oscar was raised as a boy to uphold her family's military tradition. Feeling stifled by the strict demands of her new royal role and craving friendship, Antoinette quickly forms a bond with the enigmatic Oscar. Yet as the immature queen carelessly misuses her authority, Oscar finds herself torn between her duty to the monarchy and her growing unease over the suffering of the French people. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, "Versailles no Bara" follows the intertwined lives of these two women, both trapped by the weight of family obligations. Despite being forced to sacrifice their own identities for the sake of duty, they nonetheless carve their names into history.
