Midori
In 1920s Tokyo, twelve-year-old Midori struggles to survive in poverty, selling camellias in the slums with little luck. One day, a kind stranger offers her help. After her sick mother passes away and she has nowhere else to go, Midori seeks out the man-only to realize she’s been tricked into joining Aka Neko Za, a grotesque traveling circus filled with crude and disfigured performers. Life with the troupe feels like hell. Midori is forced to clean up after the others while enduring constant ridicule and abuse. Just as despair sets in, a famous illusionist named Wonder Masamitsu joins the show. Drawn to her beauty and innocence, he becomes her protector, and their bond deepens into love. But even as Midori finds fleeting comfort, darker days await her and the circus’s outcast performers.
