Little Remi and Famous Dog Capi

This adaptation of "Sans Famille" by Hector Malot follows Remi, a boy sold to Vitalis, a traveling musician who performs with a troupe of animals. The film stays true to the original story but condenses it, blending musical numbers typical of Toei's style at the time, occasional clumsy humor, and plenty of sentimental moments. The animation is notably fluid. While it's a charming watch, especially for its technical polish, the story leans heavily into melodrama and feels overly sentimental. The later Dezaki/Sugino version takes a different approach, spreading the narrative across 52 episodes with richer storytelling.
