The Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart was established to train puppeteers in the art of "Machinart," a form of machine magic that grants life and intelligence to mechanical dolls, known as "automatons." With militaries worldwide adopting Machinart, the academy's purpose is to prepare skilled handlers for these powerful creations. Raishin Akabane and his humanoid automaton, Yaya, fail the academy's entrance exams. To secure a place in the Evening Party-a brutal competition where puppeteers battle with their automatons for supremacy-they must defeat one of the top hundred students. The winner earns the title of "Wiseman" and the right to learn forbidden arts. Raishin challenges Charlotte Belew and her automaton, Sigmund, to a duel. But before the fight begins, other students attack Sigmund. After helping Charlotte fend off the assailants, Raishin calls off the duel, leaving him to find another way into the Party. Haunted by his past, he and Yaya continue their struggle to climb the ranks and claim the title of Wiseman.
