In 2075, humanity has made space travel routine. The moon has been colonized, outer space has become a commercial industry, and powerful corporations dominate the celestial frontier. Ai Tanabe, an optimistic young woman fascinated by the cosmos, joins Technora Corporation’s Debris Section-a team tasked with cleaning up dangerous space junk orbiting between Earth and the moon. But Ai quickly learns how little respect her department gets. Mocked by the rest of Technora, the Debris Section struggles with too few workers, meager funding, and a rundown ship nicknamed the "Toy Box." Despite this, Ai stays determined and gets to know her eccentric coworkers: Philippe Myers, a clumsy but kindhearted office manager; Edelgard Rivera, a quiet and secretive temp worker; and Hachirouta Hoshino, a fiery dreamer desperate for his own spaceship. "Planetes" is a down-to-earth sci-fi story that uses the vastness of space as a stage for everyday lives-people rooted on Earth but whose hearts belong among the stars.
