Makoto "Smile" Tsukimoto and Yutaka "Peco" Hoshino have been close friends since childhood, even though they couldn’t be more different. Peco dreams of becoming the world’s best ping-pong player, but his cocky attitude and habit of skipping practice frustrate his teammates on the Katase High School team. Smile, on the other hand, has natural talent but holds back when playing against others. Their shared love for the game has forged an unshakable bond between them. When Peco learns that a former Chinese national team player is visiting Japan, he drags Smile to rival Tsujido High to watch him play. There, Peco challenges Kong Wenge and suffers a crushing defeat. The loss shakes Peco to his core, making him question why he even plays ping-pong. Meanwhile, Katase’s coach sees Smile’s potential and pushes him to stop holding back-but Smile resists, unwilling to play unless it’s fun. As both boys wrestle with their reasons for playing, stronger opponents-each battling their own struggles-await them at the inter-high tournament. But the pursuit of greatness comes with harsh realities, and their unchecked ambitions may lead to more than they bargained for.
