Kazuhiko Nukumizu, a first-year high school student, doesn’t know much about teenage romance-but he sometimes imagines how his life would play out if it were a love story. As a self-described "background character," he’s perfectly content staying unnoticed, keeping to himself with little social interaction. But his quiet existence takes a sharp turn when he accidentally sees his popular classmate, Anna Yanami, get rejected by her childhood friend in a family restaurant. Though Nukumizu would rather pretend it never happened, Anna unexpectedly latches onto him, pouring out her frustrations about being doomed as the childhood friend who always loses in love. Against his will, he gets pulled deeper into her drama-and soon finds himself tangled in the messy love lives of two more girls: Lemon Yakishio, an energetic track team member, and Chika Komari, a reserved literature club member. Suddenly, Nukumizu is no longer a background player but an unwilling participant in the complicated romantic struggles of these "losing heroines."
