Yukito Urabe takes part in a ritual to lead his father's cult, convinced the all-powerful god Mitama will protect him. But when he drowns during the ceremony, his dying wish is to be reborn in a world free of gods and religion. He awakens in a strange new world where spirituality doesn't exist. There, he meets Aruaru, an eccentric girl who brings him to her village. Yet his peaceful illusions shatter when he witnesses a mass suicide and discovers the government enforces a chilling policy: anyone can be selected for execution at any time. Soon after, Aruaru and her sister are seized for execution. Yukito rushes to save them but fails. In despair, he remembers his father's teachings and prays to Mitama for help. To his shock, a young girl descends from the sky and destroys everyone who threatened them. She then introduces herself-as Mitama.
