Chie the Brat
"Jarinko Chie" is a 1981 film directed by Takahata, adapting Etsumi Haruki's popular manga. It follows ten-year-old Chie, often called "the most unfortunate girl in Japan," as she runs her family's diner while dealing with her unemployed yakuza father and separated mother. Despite the bleak setup, the story is a lighthearted comedy. Set in Osaka, which has a distinct culture compared to Tokyo, the movie's success later led to a TV series, with Takahata serving as chief director.
