Beyond the Heavens - S01

"Souten Kouro" loosely follows events from China's Three Kingdoms period, focusing on the life of Cao Cao (155-220),the last Chancellor of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Unlike most adaptations of this era, the series stands out in two key ways. First, it portrays Cao Cao in a largely positive light, a departure from his usual role as the antagonist in works like "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and other retellings. Second, it draws more from the historical "Records of the Three Kingdoms" than the fictionalized "Romance," reducing the prominence of traditional hero Liu Bei and depicting him less favorably. However, the story still borrows elements from the novel, including characters like Diao Chan and legendary weapons such as Guan Yu's Green Dragon Crescent Blade. Central to the narrative is Cao Cao's relentless drive to reform China, challenging outdated traditions and Confucian ideals in favor of practicality. This mindset frequently brings him into conflict with the established order and its supporters.
