The Barsburg Empire's Military Academy trains elite soldiers who secure victories for the empire. Students there wield a power called "Zaiphon" in battle, though the type each can use depends on their individual nature. Teito Klein, one of the academy's most talented students, faces ridicule for being a "sklave" (German for slave) with no memory of his past. Despite this, he finds friendship in a fellow student, Mikage. While studying for his final exam, Teito stumbles upon a dark secret tied to his origins. After a failed attempt to assassinate Ayanami-a high-ranking officer who murdered his father-Teito is imprisoned and awaits execution. Wanting to protect Teito, Mikage helps him escape. Teito flees to the 7th District Church, where the bishops shelter him. There, he struggles to stay ahead of Ayanami and the Military while piecing together his forgotten past-and uncovering why he alone holds the power to alter the world's fate.
