Scientists predict a 70% chance of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hitting Tokyo within the next three decades. In 2012, middle schooler Mirai visits Tokyo's artificial Odaiba Island with her younger brother Yuuki during summer vacation to see a robot exhibition. Without warning, an 8.0 quake strikes, toppling landmarks like Tokyo Tower and the Rainbow Bridge, transforming the city in an instant. Stranded in the chaos, Mirai and Yuuki meet Mari, a motorcycle courier, who helps them navigate the ruined city as they try to make their way back home to Setagaya in western Tokyo.
