Centuries after Earth's colonists settled on the planet Earl, remnants of "old technology" still exist in the form of nanomachines. These enable young women who are virgins to wield Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment (HiME) and become Meister Otomes-elite warriors who serve as royal bodyguards across the planet's kingdoms. Arika Yumemiya arrives in the Windbloom Kingdom, hoping to find her mother, a former Otome. There, she crosses paths with Nina Wáng, the academy's top Coral Otome student, and Mashiro Blan de Windbloom, the kingdom's future ruler. As Arika trains at Garderobe Academy to become an Otome herself, she becomes entangled in the schemes of those who seek to exploit the dangerous power of the ancient technology for their own ends.
