The world relies on humanoid robots called "hIEs" to handle most daily needs. When 17-year-old Arato Endo encounters an advanced android named Lacia, he unexpectedly becomes her owner. She is one of five highly intelligent androids, each with their own goals, and they battle to claim each other's abilities. As Arato navigates this conflict, he must also grapple with the evolving relationship between humans and machines-a question only he can answer.
