The world is entirely connected by a vast network, and the information age has reached its peak. Society now exists in two distinct realms: the "real world" and the "wired," a virtual network space. Souma Tooru is part of a hacker group called Steppen Wolf, navigating the digital world with ease. During their latest mission-an attack on the UN forces' database-he loses his friend and leader, Nonomura Yuuya. Tooru is captured by the military but strikes a deal for his freedom: he must work for the UN Security Force Information Administration Bureau's first squad, an anti-hacker unit. Now working for the enemy, Tooru hunts for the person responsible for his friend's death, while his new teammates each have their own motives for fighting. The conflict rages daily among three factions-terrorists, security corporations, and the military. When strange, seemingly unrelated events unfold amid the chaos, it becomes clear that something far larger is at play.
